Venlo is a city in the southeastern Netherlands, within a couple of miles of the German border. It is situated in the province of Limburg. Venlo is an attractive prospect with good shopping opportunities, and a large number of historic buildings, the origins of which date back to the days of the Romans. Documents from the 9th century mention Venlo as a trade post. Venlo received city rights in 1343, and became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1375. The downtown district of Venlo is home to a large number of historic buildings such as the Sint Martinusbasiliek, the Romerhuis, and the Venlo town hall. In the Limburgs Museum, you'll learn more about the people of Limburg and their culture. The Museum van Bommel van Dam displays mainly contemporary Dutch art at various locations. Venlo is an awarded shopping city. Several large and small shops, between historic buildings and artistic spaces, invite you to come and shop. In 2003 Venlo was awarded the title «Greenest city of Europe». City hosts The Summer park festivities called «Zomerparkfeest» in August.
