Nizhny Novgorod is the administrative centre of Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Volga Federal District. The city is located at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga rivers. Nizhny Novgorod is the sixth-largest city in Russia. City population is over 1.2 million residents. Novgorod is the main center of river tourism in Russia. In the historic part of the city there are many universities, theaters, museums and churches. The city was founded on 4 February 122 by Prince Yuri II of Vladimir. In 1612, Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky organized an army for the liberation of Moscow and all Russia from the Poles and Lithuanians. In 1817, Nizhny Novgorod became a great trade center of the Russian Empire. In 1896, All-Russia Exhibition Centre «Nizhny Novgorod Fair» was organized. In the Soviet Period the city was given the nickname «Russian Detroit» because of Gorky Automobile Plant, constructed in a city. The main attraction of the city is the Grand Kremlin (1500-1511) with its red brick towers. The only ancient edifice left within the Kremlin walls is the Archangel Cathedral first built in the 13th century. Nizhny Novgorod has a large and unusual art museum with more than 12,000 exhibits, a huge collection of works by Russian artists and representative works of Western European art.
