Kazan is the largest city and capital of Tatarstan, Russia. The city lies at the confluence of the Volga and the Kazanka rivers. Kazan is the fifth-largest city in Russia with a population of over 1.3 million residents, up to roughly 1.7 million in the metropolitan area. The city was founded more than 1000 years ago, in 1005 AD. Since 2000, the city has been undergoing a total renovation. The historical center – including the Kremlin – has been rebuilt. During the millennium celebrations, one of the largest mosque in Russia, Qolsharif, was dedicated in the Kazan Kremlin. The historical symbol of Kazan is the mythical dragon-like creature Zilant, often mentioned in Tatar legends. Kazan Kremlin (Kirman) was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. The main monuments of the Kremlin are the Annunciation Cathedral (1561-62) and the mysterious, previously leaning Seyumbik Tower, considered the most notable landmark of the city. The Khazine Art Gallery, the Hermitage-Kazan Center and the Manege Exhibition Hall are also located on the territory of the Kremlin. There are many museums in the city, including 34 state museums, several public and private galleries. The largest and most multidisciplinary of them is the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan, founded in 1894. It has a large collection of Russian art of the X - XX centuries. Kazan is one of the most visited cities in Russia by tourists. More than 3 million visitors come to the city every year.
