Gera is the city in Thuringia. City is located in the Central German Metropolitan Region, approximately 60 km south of Saxony's largest city of Leipzig, 80 km east of Thuringia's capital Erfurt and 120 km west of Saxony's capital Dresden. Gera was first mentioned in 995 and developed into a city during the 13th century. Gera is the city where was born Otto Dix – one of the most distinguished artists of the 20th century. And sometimes Gera called as the Otto-Dix City. The city of Gera has a rich cultural scene with a diversified variety of activities. Gera’s museums, namely the art gallery with the Orangerie and the birth house of Otto Dix, the City Museum, the Museum of Natural History and also the Museum of Applied Arts have a history of more than 125 years and present exclusive exhibitions. The Art-Nouveau-style theatre guarantees superior appreciation of art as it was re-opened after an extensive restoration. Gera is home city for the International Firework Festival Flammende Sterne, the Hofwiesenparkfest festival, the Höhlerfest festival and many others.
