Belgrade (Београд, Beograd) is the capital and largest city of Serbia. Nearly 1.7 million people live within the administrative limits of the City of Belgrade. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Belgrade is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. One of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinca culture, evolved within the Belgrade area in the 6th millennium BC. Belgrade served as capital of Serbia from 1284. Belgrade is one of five most creative cities in the world. Belgrade hosts many annual international cultural events, including the Film Festival, Theatre Festival, Summer Festival, BEMUS, Book Fair and the Beer Fest. The most prominent museum in Belgrade is the National Museum, founded in 1844 and reconstructed in 2018. The museum houses a collection of more than 400,000 exhibits. Belgrade has been a popular place for travelers through the centuries. The historic areas and buildings of Belgrade are among the city's premier attractions. They include National Museum and adjacent National Theatre, Zemun, Nikola Pašić Square, Terazije, the Kalemegdan Fortress, Knez Mihailova Street, Zepter Museum, Nikola Tesla Museum, the Parliament, the Church of Saint Sava, and the Old Palace. On top of this, there are many parks, monuments, museums, cafés, restaurants and shops on both sides of the river.
